A Fond Farewell

This past Sunday night I shared with our church family I will be preaching in view of a call June 1 at Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This is the church I pastored before coming to Jackson. The reason I shared this information is that word has unfortunately leaked out in Cape. Because of my love and respect for you, I did not want you to hear it second hand but from me. If all goes well June 1, I will return that evening and officially offer my resignation. My last Sunday will be July 13.

The reason I am leaving is because I simply believe it is God’s will. There are two primary factors that led to that conclusion. First, Lynwood is a wounded and hurting church for reasons that are too long to explain. They have asked me to come back and help heal the church, cast a vision and move it forward once again. I feel God has gifted and equipped me to do that at this particular time.

The second reason for leaving is I believe Colonial Heights is ready for someone to come and take the church to the next level. Could I stay and do that? Yes, but I am convinced after much prayer, fasting and seeking godly counsel that a new pastor will better serve you as you continue to fulfill the Great Commission. We have made significant changes over the last eight years, and things are going very well now. I could not be more pleased. A new pastor will not have not to make any major changes. Things are in place to launch the church forward exponentially with the leadership of a new pastor and the power of God’s Spirit working through you. I have absolute confidence! For the record, no one has asked me to leave, nor has anything happened to warrant my leaving. Karen and I simply believe this is God’s will for us and you.

My family and I do covet your prayers during this time of transition. We need to sell our house, continue my ministry here while preparing for the ministry there, get our kids ready for school there, etc., etc.

Please know of my love for you. If love were a call, I could never leave. You have been so gracious to us over these past eight years. Colonial Heights is one of the greatest churches in America, but your greatest days are ahead. I will give my absolute best until we leave as I help you transition. Remember, God is control. He knew this was going to happen. He loves you and His Church.
